There are plenty of used motorcycles that have many years of good riding left in them. Of course, there are also a few lemons out there. Luckily, all it takes is a basic inspection to establish a used motorcycle’s overall condition. If you’re in the market for a used motorcycle and want to know how to perform a proper inspection, this guide from District Harley-Davidson® will walk you through the basics.
 

Outer Appearance

It’s hardly unusual for a used motorcycle to accumulate a few dings, dents, or scratches, so you shouldn’t make a judgment call based solely on external appearance. On the other hand, a bike that looks beat up may have experienced a lot of hard falls in its time. Check to make sure that the used motorcycle’s tires are fully aligned. A misalignment usually means that the bike has been crashed at least once.
 

Internal Alignment

Next, take a look at the used motorcycle’s internal components. There's a lot to look at, including nuts, bolts, valves, brakes, rotors, drain plugs, injectors, carburetors, tires, chains, and throttle bodies, so be very thorough. If you notice a lot of misaligned components, that usually indicates that the used motorcycle hasn’t been well maintained.
 

Other Interior Components

Finally, take a look at the used motorcycle’s internal systems. Check the fuel tank for metal flakes and discolored fuel. Test the cooling system to make sure that it functions as it should. The air filter and spark plug will also need a once-over.
